1976 TRIUMPH TR7 2.0 ? LMT 462P ? MOTOR MAGAZINE FEATURE & COVER CAR ? BUILT IN SPEKE
A genuinely fascinating early 1976 Triumph TR7, registration LMT 462P, with exceptional documented period motoring history and a wonderful story from virtually the beginning of its life.
What really sets this car apart is its originality, condition and provenance. It retains every original body panel and has never been welded, something increasingly difficult to find on an early Speke-built TR7.
It is also a matching-numbers car, retaining its original engine and wonderfully period 4-speed gearbox, giving it exactly the character an early TR7 should have.
The car is well known within TR7 circles and benefits from a documented repaint and recommissioning, adding further confidence to its history and provenance.
The level of originality extends right down to the details: original black cord seats, carpets and headlining, the original press-stud on the boot floor for the luggage cover, and the extremely rare factory map-reading light, which still works.
Combined with its very early build date and press-car history, it is difficult to imagine finding another early UK TR7 offering this combination of originality, condition and provenance.
And then there is the colour. It suits the TR7 superbly and attracts attention wherever it goes ? this is a car with genuine 1970s character and presence.
THE MOTOR MAGAZINE CAR
What makes LMT 462P particularly special is its genuine and documented period motoring-press provenance.
When virtually new, LMT 462P became a Motor magazine running-report car.
The original 11 September 1976 issue of Motor magazine accompanies the car, and remarkably LMT 462P appears on the front cover alongside a Ferrari 308 GTB.
Inside that same issue is a dedicated Triumph TR7 Running Report by Mike McCarthy, featuring period photographs of LMT 462P and discussing the magazine?s experiences with the car.
The article records the TR7 as having been purchased on 2 July 1976 and showing only 1,605 miles at the time of the report.
Nearly half a century later, having the original magazine showing and discussing this exact registration gives the car a level of period provenance rarely found with surviving TR7s.
Further original period magazines and TR7 material are also included with the car.
BRITISH MOTOR INDUSTRY HERITAGE TRUST CERTIFICATE
The car is accompanied by a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certified Copy of a Factory Record, confirming:
* Triumph TR7 Coupe
* VIN ACG/2385
* Built 19 June 1976
* RHD Home Market specification
* Original exterior colour: Russet
* Original trim: Black (cord)
* Four-speed gearbox
* Heater
* Sundym laminated windscreen
* Inertia-reel seatbelts
* Dip-left headlamps
The Heritage documentation also records registration LMT 462P.
CONDITION & MECHANICAL WORK
Today the car presents extremely well in its distinctive Russet colour and retains all the unmistakable character of an early TR7.
Most importantly, the car drives lovely and is an extremely enjoyable example on the road.
It has recently benefited from significant mechanical attention, including a reconditioned Rob Sport cylinder head including camshaft, together with head gasket and associated components and mechanical labour. Supporting invoices are included within the history.
A reproduction TR7 owner?s handbook has also recently been purchased for the car.
The V5 records the vehicle correctly as a Triumph TR7 Coupe, 1998cc petrol, Historic Vehicle, first registered 2 July 1976.
A TR7 WITH A GENUINE STORY
Early TR7s are increasingly appreciated as an important part of British motoring history, but LMT 462P is considerably more interesting than the average surviving example.
Built at Speke in Liverpool, finished in the quintessentially 1970s Russet colour and then used by one of Britain?s leading motoring publications when almost new, it has genuine period provenance that simply cannot be recreated.
The opportunity to own the actual registration pictured in a 1976 Motor magazine road report and on the magazine?s front cover is what makes this car so appealing.
It would make an excellent addition to a Triumph or British sports-car collection, while remaining a car that can actually be taken out and enjoyed.
